From Dalmatians to dachshunds, almost 1,000 dog lovers across the county submitted their canine companions to be the next Suffolk Dog Day Superstar – and we’re happy to announce that Wilson, the Saint Bernard from Bury St Edmunds has been named top dog!
For over a decade, Suffolk Dog Day has been the premier event in the canine calendar. Run by Suffolk Community Foundation, every penny raised – over £500,000 so far – goes to local Suffolk charities. This is no ordinary date in the doggy diary, and the new Suffolk Dog Day Superstar is certainly no ordinary dog!
It was no mean feat whittling down the entries from 1,000 to a shortlist of pampered pooches, who were invited along to the Suffolk Community Foundation offices for their moment in front of the camera with award-winning photographer Mark Bailey. It was then up to the judges to choose their favourites, with Suffolk Community Foundation pup Ella on hand to give her expert opinion too!
Tim Holder, Head of Public Affairs at Suffolk Community Foundation and Head Judge says, ‘Everyone really entered in to the spirit and there was a real buzz in the office as gorgeous dogs of all shapes and sizes shimmied up the red carpet for their moment in the spotlight. They were all bursting with character and so lovely to work with. But there really could only be one winner, and sometimes bigger is best! We have chosen a new Superstar who is a gentle giant that loves being around people, and is the perfect new ambassador for Suffolk Dog Day and for all the good work it continues to do to help vulnerable people in our county.
Wilson’s owners, Zoe Thorne and Jeff Clark are huge dog lovers themselves – which is handy as Wilson stands at over 6ft tall on his hind legs!
‘Wilson is a big softie,’ explains Zoe. ‘He loves people, dogs and most of all cuddles – he even sucks his paw and hugs his teddy to help him go to sleep! We could not be more proud and are so honoured that Wilson has been chosen to be the new Suffolk Dog Day Superstar. It’s a dream come true for us, not just as Saint Bernard fans but as fans of our special boy. Suffolk Dog Day is one of the largest and most popular events in the Suffolk calendar and we are just so excited and grateful to be a part of it.’
Whilst Wilson will be taking on the very important role of Suffolk Dog Day Superstar – his face adorning billboards, posters, flyers and social media – four runners up will also feature with him on some marketing around the event.
From all over the county, the four runners up are Karen Quinlan’s Cavapoo Willow, Helene Pomeranian Simba, Leigh Ward’s Jackshund Thunder, and Amy Bird’s Cockapoo Darcie – who you can meet here!
And of course – we couldn’t announce the new Suffolk Dog Day Superstar without a word from Pembroke, who has done a fantastic job at being the furry face of Suffolk Dog Day for the last few years…
So add 28th July 2019 to your diaries, and don’t forget to follow Wilson’s journey as the new Suffolk Dog Day Superstar’s through Suffolk Dog Day’s social media platforms and using #SDDSuperstar too!
